CNY activity with Little Genie Box

Hurray! Chinese New Year is around the corner and it’s time for me to take out one of the subscription boxes from Little Genie Box (for the theme on “Chinese New Year”).

Here’s how each box looks like!

And here’s what you will see when you open it up…a surprise for the little Angs! Haha

There will usually be a story book based on the theme and an activity guide book for parents, so that we know what to do with the materials provided. A little like a lesson plan for which we can use to teach our kids.

So here’s the little Angs embarking on their first activity – Lou Hei! Haha just that it’s not Lou Hei with real veggies, but ready strips of coloured paper and a pair of chopsticks. But the boys prefer to use their personal chopsticks for Lou Hei..perhaps for a sense of personal ownershipπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚..So there we went, reciting the words on the red banner as we do the Lou Hei..Though the boys kind of struggled with the use of chopsticks, but I would say that they enjoyed the activity very much (probably because it also resonates with what they just did for the Lou Hei during our reunion dinner).

Next, we talked about the eating of dumplings and wearing of new clothes for Chinese New Year. At this point, Ian went ahead to place the pompoms and the magnetic clothes (which he thought it looks great and there’s no need for him to design/colour the clothesπŸ˜†πŸ˜†) on the activity book provided.

After that, we moved on to word recognition of the 12 Chinese Zodiac and we talked about the Zodiac of each family member. Surprisingly, Evan remembers that he’s born in the year of horse..the funniest part came when Ian was asked about Daddy’s Chinese Zodiac..

Did you manage to catch what Ian said when I said Daddy is born in the year of the pig?? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Ian said “No wonder he’s so fat and likes to sleep”πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ hahaha (Ok that’s not quite true because Papa Thiam is very slim and tall..the total opposite of meπŸ˜…πŸ˜…)

By the way, we see Ian working on the matching of chinese words to the pictures..and you might wonder where’s Evan..haha well, he’s still intrigued by the paper Lou he had a pretty long session of solo Lou Hei while we moved on to the rest of the activities. 🀣🀣

Was thinking that it was a little late (as the boys were due for their bedtime) and I wanted to continue with the rest of the activities (like writing, lantern making, dumpling making using plasticine etc) on other days..But Ian said it’s fun and he wanted to do we started writing on the laminated sheets of words (he used a whiteboard marker to write on it and cleaned it away with a whiteboard duster). A copy without lamination was provided too..but Ian prefers to write with whiteboard marker.

Finally, we ended off by reading a heartwarming story on a new year reunion where we got to understand more about the traditions for Chinese New Year and the struggles of a Dad in order to make ends meet.

I would think that this whole set of activities have saved lots of my time in terms of the preparation work. And most importantly, the boys enjoy it!

Here’s to our other favourite box on colours!

This painting was done by Ian last year when he was N2. Now that he’s in K1, I guess I can take the materials out again for him to work on the activities planned for this theme!

The painting (which Ian is proud of) is permanently pasted on the boys’ kitchen set to teach them the chinese words for the various colours.

What’s best was the fact that painting was done without mess! Small tubes of paint and cotton buds were provided for it’s literally mess-free✌✌
